Timmy Djawa Burarrwanga belongs to the Gumatj clan. He is a well-respected father, business operator, cultural and community leader. In 2010-2011 he was appointed to the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians. Djawa is Chairman of the Yirrkala Dhanbul Aboriginal Corporation, which works with the Bunuwal Group and is a voice for the people of Yirrkala and represents Yolngu in both government and business initiatives. He is also a Director of the Lanyhapuy Homelands Association which supports the development of sustainable, self-sufficient homelands for the people of Yirrkala, their families, and future generations. For several years Mr Burarrwanga has been actively involved in the management of cultural programs at the annual Garma Festival of Traditional Cultures held at the Gulkula site in north eastern Arnhem Land.
