Makassar- International / Writers / Festival 2020

About Us.

A literary festival run by ordinary citizens. A winner of International Excellence Award, London Book Fair 2020. Part of Rumata' Art Space

MIWF originated from a small event held in 2011, but has had a significant impact on the community, not only in the literary arena (writers, readers, publishers, critics), but also for the local community, Makassar, South Sulawesi, and Eastern Indonesia. The increasing number of community libraries, increased interest in books and storytelling events and endless opportunities to collaborate with local, national and international writers and artists are the highlights of the festival. In 2017 there were even around 20,000 participants involved, a new record for the achievement of events organized by independent institutions.

MIWF is organized by Rumata ‘Artspace, an independent community in Makasaar. This literary festival was held with the aim of spreading the joy of literature, increasing interest in reading, and encouraging writing and publishing activities. For more than seven years, Rumata has helped MIWF become the premier literary and cultural event in Indonesia.

MIWF hopes to become a liaison between writers, artists, literacy activists, readers, young people, and the general public. Held in the capital city of South Sulawesi, Makasaar, MIWF plays a significant role in facilitating interesting discussion events, provoking bold ideas and thoughts and becoming a symbol of intellectual engagement and cultural connections between the local population and the global literary world.
